DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Description of Department

The Minister of the Department is primarily charged with creating and enacting an Environmental Protection Policy that will ensure that the physical environment of the Empire of Blessland will be maintained in an ecologically sustainable manner, accepting that there must be a fine balance between the consequences of human habitation and the impact on Nature.

A keystone of the Departments activities is the “Greening Initiative”, a project originally commenced by the Emperor at his residence. The Minister has enlarged on this vital principle and has extended the project design to:

Encourage the Citizens of Blessland to be conscious and pro-active in consideration of the re-cover, re-cycle and re-use of domestic waste thus ultimately creating a plastic waste-free environment.
Encourage the Citizens of Blessland to create food gardens and fruit orchards at their residences to supplement healthy diet choices.
Encourage the Citizens of Blessland to engage with environmentally aware community organisations and participate as volunteers with wildlife preservation and natural vegetation regeneration projects, thereby promoting the Empire’s philosophy of reducing greenhouse emissions and preserving natural phenomena for the enjoyment of future generations.

To supplement these activities, the Minister will issue monthly essay-bulletins on related topics to assist the implementation of the Empire’s ideals.

CURRENT ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

The current Environmental Policy is to begin reducing plastic waste with the bounds of the Empire, and to begin investing in small green energy projects.

The Empire will also begin focusing to reduce current carbon dioxide output and focus on increasing oxygen output. All while making the Empire a greener and healthier place to live. This goal shall be completed by the Greenery Initiative.

It is hoped by 2021/2022 the Empire will be larger, in terms of Citizens and revenue and the Department will be able to undertake larger projects such as solar panels and en mass recycling programs.

GREENERY INITIATIVE

The Greenery Initiative is a project under the commission of the Department of Environmental Protection.

Its aim is to add more plants and greenery to the Empire and thus help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that is put out by the Empire yearly. It is also expected that by adding more plants and greenery that we can make the Empire and greener and happier place to live.

Currently the goal is 15 plants. Many of these plants will be potted and will most likely be plants which can be placed inside the Imperial Residence. The majority of the funding for the project will come directly from the Emperor and Autocrat to in order to not place excessive burden on the Imperial Budget for 2019 – 2020.

Greenery Initiative 2.0

Since April 2019, the Empire of Blessland had been slowly investing in plants around Blessland Capital State. However due to unfortunate and hostile weather all of those plans had unfortunately died.

Luckily the Emperor and Autocrat had donated 4 news plants, and the Department of Treasury had allocated monies for potting mix, and 4 new pots.

The original deadline of December 2020 was unfortunately not achieved.

However, due to the unfortunate need to replace all of the plants due to hostile weather over the last 3 months, we will aim to achieve our goal by the end of 2022.

2017 MICRONATIONAL DECLARATION ON ECOLOGICAL STEWARDSHIP

In December 2020, Blessland became a Signatory to the 2017 Micronational Declaration on Ecological Stewardship, this signature was ratified by Imperial Decree on 14 January 2021. Blessland signed this document to show our commitment for the Defence of Nature and show our commitment to Mother Nature by aiming to reduce our footprint.

The Declaration makes 13 points how to reduce waste and protect nature. The first 2 points are as follows:

Encourages micronations and their denizens to reduce waste through use of strategies such as:
1. Using digital copies of media whenever possible;
1. Properly recycling all consumable goods possible, including electrical and electronic goods,
1. paper, toner, ink cartridges, iron, aluminum, polyethylene terephthalate, glass, and plastic;
1. Household composting;
1. Giving away, instead of discarding, unwanted items;
1. Repairing broken items;
1. Avoiding the purchase of single-use and non-essential items;
Further encourages micronations and their denizens to protect watershed health by:
1. Minimizing the use of cleaning products and fertilizers containing phosphates;
1. Properly disposing of animal waste;
1. Preventing and repairing engine leaks in land vehicles and watercraft;
1. Reducing erosion by protecting slopes and planting suitable non-invasive trees and shrubs on erosive surfaces;
